MADISON LAKE, Minn. (AP) -- Cynthia Frederick has a vision -- of a bikini parade. She's hoping to organize the the World's Largest Bikini Parade next Saturday in Madison Lake, Minnesota. She'll need 451 bikini-wearing marchers to set a new record. But some people in Madison Lake aren't big on the idea of tiny bathing suits in the center of town. The bikini marchers would be part of the community's Paddlefish Days parade. Town officials say they probably can't bar people from taking part. Organizer Frederick, who owns a tanning salon, says the parade will be a fundraiser for breast cancer prevention.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Some folks might feel like they need a drink on Election Day. Now, lawmakers in Kentucky are trying to overturn a law that bars sale of booze during voting hours. Supporters say the law that bans liquor is archaic and costs the state more than $600,000 a year in lost taxes. The move is getting bipartisan support. State Representative Arnold Simpson says the ban has roots in the days when salons were also polling places. The Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. lists South Carolina as the only other state that has an Election Day booze ban.
GLENDALE, Calif. (AP) -- Meatball the bear is far from Glendale and his favorite food. People in the Southern California community say the black bear has a fondness for meatballs. Game wardens rousted Meatball from a nap in a tree yesterday and got him with tranquilizer darts. Officials say he's the same bear that was captured at a Glendale apartment complex in April and driven to the Angeles National Forest. He was spotted in the suburb again just weeks later. Now, officials of the California Department Fish and Game say the bear will be relocated deeper into the wild. The Los Angeles Times reports the bear even inspired the creation of a Twitter account, (at)theglendalebear.
FRANKLIN, Neb. (AP) -- Jerrell Gerdes dreams of saying, "sold!" The retired Nebraska hospital administrator has started a second career as an auctioneer. He learned the basics at the Missouri Auction School in St. Louis. Students spend six days practicing the auctioneer's chant and studying the other skills needed. Gerdes opened his auction company about a year ago. He tells the Hastings Tribune the strangest items he's had up for auction were reptile walking harnesses on consignment from a hardware store.
CORINTH, Miss. (AP) -- Mat "Megatoad" Stonie is the slugburger king. He wins the eating contest at the 25th Slugburger Festival in Corinth, Mississippi. He downed 30 slugburgers and buns in just 10 minutes. A slugburger is a deep-fried meat-and-soy patty. So why is a slugburger called a slugburger? Festival organizers say one possible explanation is that they used to a cost a nickel. And slug was slang for a nickel.
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- It it art or junk? That's the issue facing officials in Santa Monica, California. A mass of black chain link is piled in the shape of a mushroom cloud outside the Civic Center. The anti-war sculpture was a gift to the city in 1991. But officials say it needs as much as $400,000 worth of repairs. The experts say "Chain Reaction" could fall down. For now, there's a chain link fence to keep people away from all that chain.
