Thursday Morning Bizarre News Headlines

PATIENT PUPPY

HANNIBAL, Mo. (AP) -- Good doggie! A 9-month-old Yorkie waited for two days, after being left behind at a Missouri rest stop. Truck driver Michael Siau says he didn't know Rambo had jumped out of his rig. About 170 miles later, Siau realized Rambo was gone. He tells the Hannibal Courier-Post, he would lose his job if he had turned around. Siau says he was "freaking out" and began calling authorities. Two days later, an animal control officer found Rambo sitting patiently at the rest stop. Rambo and Siau were reunited Tuesday. Siau says from now on, he'll always make sure Rambo is in the truck.

QUESTIONABLE DONATION

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. (AP) -- Is it a gift -- or a goof? Officials at a Southern California animal shelter are looking into 1,600 bucks found in a donated pet crate. Animal care technician Amy Barnes says the cash fell out as she was sorting items contributed to the shelter. Officials at the Helen Woodward Animal Center say the money was in the form of new $100 bills. Shelter administrators add if the money was left in the crate by mistake, they want to return it. But if the cash is a gift, the North County Times reports the shelter would like to say thanks.

EX-WIFE'S TIP-ROBBERY

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- An ex's tip helps to bust a bank bandit. Authorities in western Michigan report the ex-wife of a robbery suspect turned him in. Now, Jeff Grout has pleaded guilty to robbing a bank in Holland Township. The FBI's big break came when Grout's ex-wife saw security photos. She recognized his shoes and coat. The Grand Rapids Press reports Grout had asked his ex for money just an hour before the robbery. Authorities say he was busted with more than five grand in cash.

LAKE CREATURE

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- It's the Minneapolis version of the Loch Ness Monster. But there's no mystery surrounding Minne (MIN'-nee) the Lake Creature. Minne is a 13-foot dinosaur-like sculpture that will spend the summer floating in a Minneapolis park lake. Sculptor Cameron Gainer says he was inspired by the famous 1934 photo that supposedly shows Nessie.

FREE FISHING DAYS

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Fishing's on the house in Arkansas this weekend. The idea is to get kids and others hooked on the hobby. No fishing license will be needed starting at noon tomorrow through Sunday. The state Game and Fish Commission also plans fishing derbies for kids at a number of hatcheries.

CASINO OPENING

HANOVER, Md. (AP) -- You can now try your luck just outside the nation's capital. And it has nothing to do with politics. Maryland's largest casino opened last night in a Washington suburb. There were long lines of gamblers waiting to get into the Maryland Live! Casino in Hanover. The place has about 3,200 slot machines. Another 1,550 slots are set to be added in a second phase between July and October.
