HOLIDAY SHOPPING-DISCOUNTS
NEW YORK (AP) -- You may want to check Facebook and Twitter before heading to the mall the day after Thanksgiving.
Office supplies chain Staples this week used social media to advertise price cuts of nearly 50 percent for Nov. 27 on certain laptops, GPS devices and computer monitors, and still other merchants are expected to follow suit.
The editor-in-chief of dealnews.com says retailers are smart to use social networking sites because shoppers probably will stick around as followers of the company even after the sale.
Deloitte Research says one in five shoppers plans to use the sites in their holiday shopping this season.
Hundreds of Black Friday bargains from retailers such as diverse as OfficeMax and Old Navy already are being leaked on deal sites, even though the big sales blitz is still a couple weeks away.
WAL-MART CONFIRMS BLACK FRIDAY DEALS
NEW YORK (AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores is confirming some of the deals it will be push to draw crowds for the day after Thanksgiving. They include a 50-inch Sanyo plasma HDTVs for $598 and $3 children's sleepwear.
The day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, is considered the official kickoff for the holiday shopping season. It is an important barometer of shoppers' willingness to spend for the holiday period.
Melissa O'Brien, Wal-Mart spokeswoman, says that the deals that will be heavily advertised in its Black Friday circular also include Magnavox Blu-Ray disc players for $78, TomTom GPS systems for $59 and $7 reversible fleece jackets.

WAL-MART-BLACK FRIDAY:
BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Trying to avoid a deadly accident like the one seen last year at one of its stores, Wal-Mart says it will be open 24 hours on Black Friday. It will also take new crowd control measures Thankgiving weekend.
The day-after-Thanksgiving sales will begin at 5 a.m. Nov. 27, but most U.S. stores will be open 24 hours.
The announcement doesn't affect most of Wal-Mart's Supercenters, which are already open 24 hours.
Federal safety regulators cited Wal-Mart for inadequate crowd management after the Nov. 28, 2008, death of a temporary worker at a Long Island, N.Y., store. A crowd of shoppers broke down the store's doors, trapping the employee.

Use caution going shopping. Another news report states Thanksgiving is the worst drunk driving holiday. There may still be plenty of them out there on the way to the mall!
