Beloit, WI- The Beloit Snappers, in conjunction with their parent team, the Oakland Athletics, are excited to announce the field staff for the 2013 season. The Snappers signed a two-year player development contract with the Athletics in September. 2013 marks the first season with the Athletics organization, and a new beginning for Snappers baseball.
Ryan Christenson was named manager for the A’s new Class-A affiliate, his first minor league managing assignment. Christenson played for the A’s from 1998-2001 and was a .222 career hitter in 452 games with Oakland, Arizona (2001), Milwaukee (2002) and Texas (2003).
John Wasdin begins his third season with the A’s organization, being named the Snappers pitching coach for 2013. Wasdin, a former A’s first round draft choice (25th pick overall) in the 1993 draft, played 12 seasons in the Major Leagues with Oakland (1995-96), Boston (1997-2000), Colorado (2000-01), Baltimore (2001), Toronto (2003), Texas (2004-06), and Pittsburgh (2007). His best season came in 1999, when he went 8-3 with a 4.12 ERA in 45 games for the Red Sox.
Casey Myers will be the hitting coach, his third season in this role, having spent the last two seasons in Vermont. He began his coaching career as a player-coach with Midland in 2008. Selected by the A’s in the ninth round of the 2001 June draft, he compiled a .291 career batting average over eight seasons in the A’s minor league system.
Brian Thorson returns to the A’s organization for his 30th season as a minor league athletic trainer with Oakland Athletics. He spent last season with the Vermont Lake Monsters after serving in the same role with Burlington the previous year. He has worked with a number of A’s affiliates, including present teams in Double-A Midland and Single-A Stockton. Thorson spent five years in the Milwaukee Brewers organization prior to joining the A’s. He also spent eight seasons in the Puerto Rican Winter League, attending four Caribbean Series. Thorson is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin La Crosse.
