LINCOLN, Neb. --Trailing with two outs in the top of the seventh, the Wisconsin softball team rallied to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate, but couldn’t find a way to score, falling to Nebraska 4-1 in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon in Lincoln.
Back-to-back doubles by Wisconsin in the sixth inning scored a run and cut into the Huskers’ lead. Whitney Massey doubled to start the inning and Shannel Blackshear followed with a double to score Massey from second and put the Badgers on the scoreboard.
Wisconsin (34-19 overall, 13-10 Big Ten) continued to fight in the seventh inning, loading the bases with two outs to threaten Nebraska’s lead. Maria Van Abel singled to the left side to get the rally started and walks by Mary Massei and Kendall Grimm loaded the bases for Massey. With the tying run at the plate, Nebraska’s Ashley Hagemann was able to get Massey to strike out swinging to end the game.
Nebraska (33-22, 14-9) scored its first run of the game in the first inning, taking advantage of a Badger error to jump ahead by a run. The Huskers tacked on three more in fifth, also capitalizing on a Wisconsin error, to take a 4-0 lead.
UW starting pitcher Cassandra Darrah recorded four and two-thirds innings in the circle for the Badgers. Darrah surrendered just three hits, struck out one and walked five. All four of Nebraska’s runs were unearned. Meghan McIntosh relieved Darrah in the fifth inning, recording the final four outs. McIntosh didn’t allow a hit and walked two batters.
Hagemann recorded a complete game for the Huskers, allowing four hits, walking five and striking out six UW batters.
Wisconsin finishes the 2012 regular season with a program-best 13 Big Ten wins. UW’s 34 regular-season victories ties the most in school history, while its 14 road wins are a program-best.
The Badgers’ post-season fate will be determined on Sunday during the NCAA selection show. Fans can watch live on ESPNU at 9 p.m.
