Iowa Upsets No. 11 Wisconsin 72-65

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Freshman reserve Aaron White scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and Iowa stunned No. 11 Wisconsin 72-65 on Saturday, snapping the Badgers' six-game winning streak.

White was 6 of 7 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and made all four of his free throws as the Hawkeyes (9-6, 1-1 Big Ten) held on to beat the Badgers for just the third time in the past 15 meetings.

Senior Bryce Cartwright added 17 points and sophomore Melsahn Basabe had 14 for Iowa against the vaunted Wisconsin defense which came in allowing a national-best 44.4 points per game and hadn't given up more than 61 in any game.

Senior Jordan Taylor had 17 points to lead Wisconsin (12-3, 1-1), which shot 3 for 28 from 3-point range. The Badgers had won their previous 12 Big Ten home openers at the Kohl Center.

Cartwright scored 10 points in the second half, the last two a layup with 1:55 remaining that put the Hawkeyes ahead 68-60 and sent many in the crowd of 17,230 to the exits.

Wisconsin, though, made one last surge. Taylor hit a 3-pointer and Ben Brust had a steal and layup that pulled the Badgers within 68-65 with 47 seconds to go.

Iowa worked the shot clock on its next possession and sophomore Roy Devyn Marble hit a jumper from the right of the lane with 21 seconds remaining and Jared Berggren missed a 3 on the other end to seal Iowa's victory.

Berggren finished with 12 points while Brust and fellow sophomore Josh Gasser added 11 apiece for Wisconsin, which lost at home to an unranked opponent for the first time in 24 games. The last unranked team to beat the Badgers here was Illinois, 63-56 on Feb. 9, 2010.

The Hawkeyes took a 10-2 lead as Basabe, who came in averaging 9.8 points, scored six in the opening 3:05. Iowa maintained its lead throughout the first half, but the Badgers managed to keep it close despite struggling from the field.

Wisconsin made just one of its first 10 3-point attempts, but Taylor's 3 from the left side 5:14 before halftime gave the Badgers their first lead at 25-24.

The Hawkeyes came right back and took a 31-27 lead, then watched Wisconsin go on a 9-0 run spanning halftime. Iowa was 0 for 9 from the field and committed four turnovers in that stretch, which left the Badgers with a 38-31 lead.

White ended Iowa's barren stretch with a 3-pointer from the left side. He scored 11 of the Hawkeyes' first 15 points of the second half, with his putback with 11:32 remaining giving Iowa a 46-44 lead.

White's output was double that of his season average and he scored his 18 points in just 20 minutes. Cartwright, meanwhile, came in averaging 5.9 points -- he scored more than that in a 4-minute span midway through the second half.
