MINNEAPOLIS -- After taking a 1-0 lead over No. 1 Minnesota in the first period, the No. 4-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team fell to the Golden Gophers 2-1, Friday night at Ridder Arena.

The Badgers (2-1-0, 2-1-0 WCHA), jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after sophomore Erika Sowchuk found the back of the net on the power play off of an assist by freshman Mellissa Channell at the 11:03 mark in the first stanza. The goal marked Sowchuk’s first of the season, while Channell recorded her first collegiate point on the play.

The Gophers (3-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) answered quickly on their own power play less than two minutes later. Maryanne Menefee scored her third goal of the season to knot the game up at one apiece.

The Badgers dominated the second frame, outshooting the Gophers 18-5, but were unable to find the back of the net. Wisconsin ended the game outshooting Minnesota, 35-23.

The game would remained tied at one until the 7:12 mark in the third period, as Milica McMillen scored an unassisted goal on the power play to give Minnesota a lead it would not relinquish.

The Gophers ended the night going 2-3 on the power play, while Wisconsin went 1-4.

Wisconsin senior captain Alex Rigsby made 21 saves, including 11 in the final frame, while Minnesota netminder Amanda Leveille earned 34 saves to earn her third win of the year.

The two teams will square off tomorrow in a 4 p.m. game at Ridder Arena as Wisconsin looks to snap Minnesota’s 52-game winning streak.
