MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team will face Virginia Tech in the sixth annual Atlantic Coast Conference/Big Ten Conference Challenge this winter, the conference offices announced today. The Badgers will face the Hokies on Wednesday, Nov. 28 in Blacksburg, Va.
Wisconsin is 3-2 all time in the Challenge after defeating Boston College, 58-50, in Madison last season. The Badgers lost to No. 5 Duke in 2010; won at N.C. State in 2009; defeated Virginia Tech at home in 2008; and lost at Virginia in 2007.
UW head coach Bobbie Kelsey spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech from 2004-07 while assistant coach Stacy Cantley also served as an assistant coach with the Hokies from 2004-11.
The ACC has dominated the challenge, winning four of five seasons. In 2011, the Big Ten and ACC battled to a 6-6 draw for the first time in challenge history. The ACC won the battle 6-5 in 2010; 7-4 in 2009; 7-4 in 2008; and 8-3 in 2007.
The conference offices also announced that the Challenge has been extended to 2016.
