MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men’s hockey head coach Mike Eaves announced on Tuesday the signing of defenseman Eddie Wittchow (Burnsville, Minn.) to a national letter of intent. Wittchow (pronounced WIHT-kow) will join the Badgers for the 2012-13 school year.

A 6-4 and 200-pound defenseman, Wittchow will join the Badgers after playing this season for the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL. In 60 regular-season games, Wittchow scored five goals and 18 points, and posted a team-best plus-22. He boasts four assists in nine playoff games and has helped his Black Hawks to a 1-1 mark against Green Bay in the best-of-five finals of the Clark Cup playoffs.

Chosen as the No. 154 overall pick by the Florida Panthers in the sixth round of 2011 NHL draft, the left-handed shot played at Burnsville High School before his time in Waterloo. During his 2010-11 season at Burnsville, the same school as current Badger forward Tyler Barnes, Wittchow talled 11 goals and 26 points in 28 games played.

Also an outstanding lacrosse player, he was named all-section in the sport as a junior, before spending his senior year focusing on hockey.

“Eddie will be able to come in and give us a real physical presence on the blue line,” said Eaves. “He’s got a big body and moves very well. He’s got the propensity to make a good breakout pass and gets back quickly to help get the puck out of the zone. He possesses a really nice shot from the point - a smart shot. He’s going to be a real anchor for us on the blue line.”

Wittchow is the fourth student-athlete signed to a national letter of intent and who is expected to join the Badgers this fall. Forwards Nicolas Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif.) and Morgan Zulinick (Kamloops, British Columbia) and defenseman Kevin Schulze (White Bear Lake, Minn.) signed letters during the early signing period last November.
