Madison, WI. - The Madison Mallards (10-5) fell to the Lakeshore Chinooks (11-4) by a score of 5-1 tonight at the “Duck Pond” in the first game of a two game home and home series. The Mallards run came on a Pete Alonso (Florida) home run in the sixth, but that was the only hit that came for the Mallards on a night where the Chinooks received stellar pitching from a trio of pitchers. The Mallards now are one game behind the Chinooks in the South Division of the Northwoods League.
Mallards starter Alex Pondick (Montevallo) pitched four innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out one to fall to 2-1 on the year. Showing promise for the Mallards was relief pitcher AJ Bogucki (North Carolina). Bogucki came on in the 8th, and gave up one hit and one walk while striking out three to hold the Chinooks scoreless in two innings of work.
The Chinooks received spectacular pitching from starter G.J. Strauss (Florida Tech), who pitched six innings of one hit and one run ball to move to 2-0 on the year. He struck out four Mallards and was helped to his second win of the year by scoreless relief pitching from Garret Brummet (Wichita State) and Shaun Anderson (Florida). Brummet worked one inning of scoreless ball and Anderson closed out the Mallards in the eighth and ninth, fanning three batters including two in the ninth.
Tomorrow, the Mallards travel to Mequon to play the Chinooks at 6:35 pm. They return to the “Duck Pond” on Friday, June 13th to play the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters at 7:05 pm. Friday night is Charter Communications Office Space Night with an appearance by Richard Riehle, who played Tom Symkowski, the creator of the Jump to Conclusions Mat. Doc Jams will provide old printers and copiers for fans to smash on the field post-game.
