Football Rivalry Leads to Blanketgate

The high school football rivalry between Kimberly and Kaukauna has led to what the locals call "blanketgate."

The big prep game by the crosstown rivals is a week and a-half away in Kimberly. And, already football fans were saving bleacher seats by covering them with blankets or plastic. Some are taped down, others are stapled.

Kimberly Schools Superintendent Mel Lightner says that's made some fans mad. So the School Board will address "blanketgate" at its meeting on Monday.

For now, the maintenance department has confiscated the blankets, bed sheets and plastic already left on about 50 seats at the football field. The superintendent says covering seats isn't fair to everyone else.

Truthfully, I wouldn't hesitate a second to remove any blanket left to reserve a seat 10 days in advance of the event. Nobody had a right to claim a seat 10 days before the event. It's absurd to even think that's acceptable.

This is happening more and more, Monona Memorial day parade, Rhythm & Booms, Concerts on the Square, Rock County Fair Concerts, etc. Organizers need to address this issue just like the Kimberly School District did! Otherwise to save seats you need to be sitting there the entire time to be fair to everyone.

School boards are always looking for ways to raise money. Why not raffle off bleacher seats? Or raffle off a specific spot in line for when the gate opens on game night? There has to be a way to make money for the schools if this event is that popular.

Its a high school football game for godsakes. If you want a seat that bad, sit there with it.
