New Sports Drink Fuels UW Athletes

University of Wisconsin athletes are being fueled by a new kind of supplement drink that is made on their own campus. It's a recovery drink made from the product Wisconsin is known best for.

Not only are the UW Badgers performing on the field with a #9 ranking going into Saturday's home game, they're also performing off the field.

Ben Herbert is a former player and the Universities Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach. He says, "If a guy trains 4 days a week, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday Friday, there is not a lot of recovery time in there so you have to make sure that time is used in the most efficient way possible."

To improve that efficiency, the UW is using a home grown product to help speed up an athlete's recovery time from one work out to the next.
It's produced in Babcock Hall and is simply called, Recovery Drink. K.J. Burrington helped create the drink and says, "The finished product is a product that's made form a whey protein concentrate that's actually produced here in Wisconsin."

The whey protein comes from cows during the cheese making process as it separates from the curd. It's then formulated with the amount of sugars and carbohydrates nutritionists at the UW are looking for. Herbert says, "We just noticed that from our training session to training session, practice to practice that our guys are recovering faster and they're feeling better."

Whey protein is not new to collegiate athletes, but what is new is the way it tastes. Herbert says, "They look forward to drinking it, which from our end makes it easy because now you don't have to force feed it to the guys. One they understand it's good for them, two it tastes great and it's a great combination."

It's a product that's currently limited to Badger football players and men and women's basketball and hockey, but has greater potential and a big pay off. Burrington says, "It could be bigger than the University of Wisconsin." Herbert adds, "We can minimize their down time and they can come back fresher, more rested and healthier, well then we can ensure they're going to go out on the field and compete at a higher level."

Hopefully improving on an already impressive number nine ranking.

.Not only is this product proving to be effective for athletes, research is showing it can also help decrease your appetite and target fat loss instead of fat and muscle loss. The Recovery Drink comes in orange and strawberry flavors and is being sold at Babcock Hall for 85 cents.
