3rd time like last 2 a charm for Whitewater football

WHITEWATER, Wis. (AP) -- Danny Jones ran for one touchdown and passed for another to lead Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 16-7 victory today over Mary Hardin-Baylor in an NCAA Division Three semifinal.

Jones tallied on a 1-yard run to cap a 73-yard drive in the first quarter to open the scoring, then added a 25-yard scoring pass to Neil Mrkvicka in the second period to end a 62-yard push.

Josh Welch went in from the 1 for Mary Hardin-Baylor's only touchdown late in the first quarter before Joel Munoz's extra point gave his team its only lead of the game at 7-6.

Jeff Schebler, whose kick after Jones' first score was blocked, completed the scoring with a 39-yard field goal in the final period.

Wisconsin-Whitewater advanced to the 35th annual Stagg Bowl next Saturday against Mount Union, which routed Bethel 62-14 in the other semifinal.
