Friday Wisconsin Sports UPDATE

Here is the latest Wisconsin sports from The AP

NEW YORK (AP) -- A year ago, few would have expected Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy to compete for an honor as The Associated Press 2007 NFL Coach of the Year. But McCarthy wound up as the runnerup to Bill Belichick of the unbeaten New England Patriots for the annual award. Belicheck got 50 votes from a media panel and McCarthy got 15.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Offensive lineman Junius Coston has been placed on injured reserve by the Green Bay Packers. He played in 13 games and started seven of them for the Packers this season, his third season with Green Bay. That was before he suffered a calf injury in the game against Detroit last Sunday.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Dominic James scored 21 points and Lazar Hayward added 17 as 10th-ranked Marquette easily beat Providence 96-67 in the Big East men's basketball opener for both teams last night in Milwaukee. Marquette (11-1) won its seventh straight game because the Golden Eagles were too fast and too deep for the shorthanded Providence team (9-4). The Friars were missing starting point guard Sharaud Curry and backup Dwain Williams due to injuries.

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Ricky Franklin scored a career-high 24 points and Wisconsin-Milwaukee hit a season-high 12 3-pointers to defeat Wright State 75-64 in a Horizon League men's basketball game in Milwaukee last night. The Panthers (6-7, 1-2) won their third straight game even though their ever-shrinking roster was down to 10 players.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Ryan Tillema scored 16 of his 23 points in the first half as Wisconsin-Green Bay took control early and beat Detroit 78-52 in a Horizon League men's basketball game last night in Green Bay.
