Packers GM gets new 5-year contract

Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson has signed a new, five-year contract which runs through the 2012 season.

Chairman Bob Harlan says Thompson is doing exactly what was anticipated when he was hired. He built a strong football team in Green Bay that's back in the playoffs.

Harlan says Thompson has the Packers positioned well for the future with his system of building the team through the draft.

The 54-year-old Thompson is a native of Atlanta, Texas. He played at Southern Methodist University and with the Houston Oilers before serving eight years in the Packers' personnel department. He spent five years in Seattle as that team's vice president of football operations before rejoining the Packers in 2005.

Forty of the 53 players on Green Bay's active roster have been acquired by Thompson.
