Badger Hockey team loses heartbreaker

DENVER - The No. 17 University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team (8-10-3,
4-8-1 WCHA) fell in a 3-2 heartbreaker to the No. 2/3 Denver Pioneers
(17-4-0, 12-3-0 WCHA) at Magness Arena on Friday night. The Badgers had
a spectacular attempt to tie the game at the buzzer, but Matthew Ford’s
goal at the buzzer was not counted, despite television replays showing
the goal being scored before the end of the game.

The controversy came after numerous clock problems with the clock
running after whistles and random changes to the time.
With the UW's Kyle Turris on the draw and 3.7 seconds showing on the
clock, the freshman tied up with the DU center, allowing Ford to
retrieve the loose puck. The senior pulled the puck towards the slot and
fired a shot that beat DU netminder Peter Mannino.

The FSN replay clearly shows time left on the clock when the goal goes
in. According to FSN, its clock shown on television is tied in directly
to the arena clock. Also, the red light signaling a goal went on before
the green light, which signifies the end of the period. In hockey rinks,
the green light typically locks out the red light from even going on.
