UW's WCHA foe North Dakota has coach suspended for 2 games

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- University of North Dakota men's hockey coach Dave Hakstol has been suspended for two games for his actions at Saturday night's game in Minnesota.

Hakstol stuck up his middle finger at referee Don Adam after a discussion about a penalty call during the second period. The Sioux and the Gophers played to a 1-1 tie.

UND says the suspension is for the next two games -- and it's independent of punishment by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

WCHA Commissioner Bruce McLeod says Hakstol's action was unsportsmanlike.

Hakstol says he called Adam after the game to personally apologize. He issued a public statement of apology to fans, players and the WCHA for letting his emotions get the better of him.

His statement adds: "I understand the responsibility that we carry as coaches within the WCHA to young hockey fans and families everywhere. I have evaluated and feel terrible about my actions and can assure everyone that such a thing will never happen again."
