Carl Edwards won the rain-delayed Auto Club 500. And he showed good form on his traditional victory backflip off his car in front of the main grandstand after taking the checkered flag in a race that ended under caution when Dale Jarrett spun on the final lap.
Jimmie Johnson was in first place when rain brought a halt to the race last night after 87 of 250 laps. And the two-time reigning series champion came out of the final pit stop in the lead with 26 laps remaining before Edwards ran him down with 13 laps to go to and claimed his eighth title in NASCAR's top series.
Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon finished third. He was followed by Kyle Busch and Edwards' Roush Fenway Racing teammate and Cambridge native Matt Kenseth, who had won the two previous February races at this track. Janesville's Travis Kvapil finished 36th.
