MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Verona let a 13-point lead evaporate but was strong in the final minute to defeat De Pere 53-50 tonight in the Division 1 quarterfinals of the Wisconsin State Girls Basketball Tournament in Madison.
The Wildcats (19-6) got a superb performance from Leslie Schaefer, who scored 17 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked 7 shots.
Sadie Ewing added 10 points and Megan McGowan and Jaclyn Cropp 8 apiece for Verona, which led 37-24 midway through the third quarter.
Claire Steffen scored 18 points and Adrian Ritchie had 14 points and 10 rebounds for De Pere (22-3).
Verona advances to play defending champion Milwaukee Vincent (20-3) in the semifinals.
