Featuring a barrage of 3-pointers and another well-balanced attack that saw every member of the team score, the 2009 USA Men’s World University Games Team (5-0) advanced to the 2009 World University Games medal semifinals unscathed after bouncing Bulgaria (3-2) 96-66 on Thursday night in Belgrade, Serbia.
The squad set a USA World University Games record with 16 made 3-pointers, wiping out the previous record of 12 set at the ’95 WUGs, and was led from behind the arc by 4-of-6 shooting from Da'Sean Butler (West Virginia / Newark, N.J.) and a 3-of-4 performance from Talor Battle (Penn State / Albany, N.Y.).
Five players scored in double digits, led by 15 points from Quincy Pondexter.
The USA will go up against Russia (5-1) in the first medal semifinal game (11:30 a.m. EDT) on July 10., while Serbia (4-1) will face Israel (6-0) in the second semifinal for the right to advance to the July 11 gold medal game.
Head coach Bo Ryan is being assisted by Rob Jeter of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
