Organizers of the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race intend to run the 31-mile event as scheduled Saturday.
Snow is being shoveled onto the course because northwestern Wisconsin has had relatively little snow this season. Director of race operations, Shellie Milford, describes the course conditions as "challenging."
Forecasters say snow is in the forecast for Saturday.
It's the 34th annual event that runs from Cable to Hayward. About seven-thousand skiers are expected to participate in the 51 kilometer Birkebeiner and 23 kilometer Kortelopet ski races.
The Birkebeiner is part of the Worldloppet, a circuit of 14 Nordic ski races held on four continents.
