Badgers Fit to be Tied

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team skated to a 0-0 tie with Minnesota-Duluth Saturday night at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center in Duluth, Minn. Sophomore goalie Shane Connelly notched his third shutout of the season as the Badgers finished the regular season 15-17-4 and 12-13-3 in the WCHA.

Wisconsin finishes the season tied for sixth in the WCHA with Michigan Tech. Because of a tie breaker, Wisconsin will be the No. 7 seed in the WCHA tournament.

At press time, Wisconsin has the opportunity to play North Dakota, Denver or Colorado College based on late results. Denver and Colorado College are facing off against each other in Colorado Springs, Colo. If DU beats CC, then Wisconsin will play North Dakota, if CC beats Denver then the Badgers will play CC, finally if Denver and Colorado College tie, then the Badgers will take on Denver.

Minnesota won its second consecutive conference title with its win over Michigan Tech Friday night.

Ben Street (Coquitlam, B.C.) led the Badger offense with five shots on goal. Both teams had seven penalties, combing for nine total power plays in the game. The Badgers had a chance with 47 seconds to play in the third period as UMD’s Jordan Fulton went to the penalty box for two minutes after an Obstruction-hooking penalty.

The third ended and UW carried over their power play, but was unable to convert and the game ended 0-0. Minnesota Duluth finishes the regular season 12-19-5 overall, and 8-16-4 in the WCHA. The Bulldogs finished ninth in the conference and will take on St. Cloud State next week in the first round of the WCHA playoffs.

UW’s Connelly (Cheltenham, Pa,) ended the night with 38 saves, while UMD’s Josh Johnson stopped 32 shots from the Badgers. UW was 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Bulldogs went 0-for-5.

The Badgers will travel to North Dakota, Colorado College or Denver in a best of three series in first round action of the WCHA tournament Mar. 9-11.
