Badger Women's Tennis Falls to Michigan

The Wisconsin women’s tennis team finished up another Big Ten Conference road trip Sunday. The Badgers traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., and suffered a 7-0 set-back to the No. 31 Michigan Wolverines. Wisconsin drops to 3-10 overall on the season, 0-5 in the Big Ten, while Michigan improves to 5-5, 1-1.

With Wisconsin and Michigan both winning one doubles match, it came down to the No. 2 match to decide the point. UW’s senior Caitlin Burke (Cedarburg, Wis.) and junior Nicole Beck (Lawrenceville, Ga.) matched up against Michigan’s Kara Delicata and Tania Mahtani and had a 5-4 advantage midway through the match. The Wolverines clawed back in and scored the next three points to go up 7-5 on the Badgers. Wisconsin retaliated though by also going on a three-point run to take an 8-7 advantage. With Michigan taking the following set, the match went into a tie-breaker and the Wolverines prevailed, 9-8.

In the other doubles matches, Wisconsin’s junior Chelsea Nusslock (Lake Forest, Ill.) and freshman Kim Roberts (Wrexham, Wales) captured an 8-3 victory over Michigan’s Elizabeth Exon and Alie Shafner at the No. 3 spot. Michigan’s other doubles win came at the No. 1 spot with an 8-3 win over the UW’s senior Kaylan Caiati (Greendale, Wis.) and sophomore Liz Carpenter (Sierra Madre, Calif.).

In singles, Caiati stormed out to a quick 6-1 win over Michigan’s No. 81 Jenny Kuehn in the first set of the No. 1 spot. The Wolverines came back to take the second set, 6-2 and forced a match-tie breaker. Each played within one point of each other and knotted the score five times down the stretch. Caiati was on the brink of clinching the win with an 11-10 advantage in the tie breaker, but Kuehn rattled off the next three points to take the tie-breaker and the match, 13-11.

At the No. 2 position, Carpenter also faced another ranked opponent in No. 76 Chisako Sugiyama. Despite a 3-2 Carpenter advantage in the first set, Sugiyama went on to win, 6-3. Carpenter again took the lead at 4-3 and 5-4 in the second before knocking of Sugiyama, 6-4. In the tie-breaker, Sugiyama surged out to an 8-1 lead. Carpenter would score three straight to put the score at 8-4 but Sugiyama captured the tie-breaker, 10-4.

Nusslock fell in a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Michigan’s Delicata at No. 3, while sophomore Erin Jobe (Corydon, Ky.) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match to Mahtani at the No. 4 spot.

Roberts rounded out the Badger competitors and dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to Exon at the No. 5 spot.

Wisconsin will take the next week off before returning to the Nielsen Tennis Stadium for a 4 p.m. match-up against No. 2 Notre Dame, Thursday, March 22.
