MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers today re-signed right-handed reliever Claudio Vargas to a one-year contract. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin.

Vargas, 31, went a combined 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA in 36 relief appearances between Los Angeles and Milwaukee last season while holding opponents to a .177 batting average. He did not surrender a run in his final 13 appearances of the season (14ip).

Vargas began the year on the 60-day disabled list with the Dodgers with right elbow tendinitis, missing 79 games. He was reinstated from the disabled list on July 3 and went 0-0 with a 1.64 ERA in eight appearances with Los Angeles before being traded to Milwaukee on July 31 in exchange for catcher Vinny Rottino. Vargas went 1-0 with a 1.78 ERA in 28 appearances with the Brewers.

In another transaction, the Brewers signed catcher Matt Treanor to a minor-league contract with an invitation to Major League camp. Treanor, 33, was limited to four games with Detroit last season due to a right hip injury. He spent most of the previous five seasons (2004-08) with Florida.
