The cars driven by Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson failed initial inspection and will not be allowed to practice or qualify Friday for Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Infineon Raceway.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston says both the Number 24 and Number 48 Chevrolets of Hendrick Motorsports had modifications to the front fenders "found to be outside NASCAR tolerances."

No further penalties or suspensions were announced, and Poston says the teams will be allowed to repair their cars and try to get them through inspection. Since they will not be allowed to qualify, both cars will have to start from the rear of the 43-car field if they pass inspection.
