Crystal Graff, senior-to-be at Robert M. La Follette High School in Madison, has been named to the USA Volleyball Team. Crystal, a University of Wisconsin-Madison volleyball recruit is among 12 girls who will represent the United States in the first ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore Aug. 21-26.
Athlete eligibility for the Youth Olympic Games is based on age ranges determined by the IOC. Volleyball participants had to be born between Jan. 1, 1992 and Dec. 31, 1993. Girls selected for the roster are from all over the country including three from California, two from Texas, six from Midwestern states and one from Alabama. Crystal is the only member from Wisconsin.
Crystal, the reigning Gatorade player of the year for Wisconsin, has been granted a waiver by the WIAA to participate in these games through the Exceptional Athlete Waiver (Rules of Eligibility, Article VI—Section I—In Season, 4).
The U.S. team will report to Singapore on Aug. 11 and open play against Belgium on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. (local time). It will finish pool play against Egypt on Aug. 23 at 3:30 p.m. (local time). Semifinals take place on Aug. 24 with the top two teams from each pool. Medal rounds and finals classification matches take place on Aug. 25.
