Catching up with Ryan's past

The NCAA tournament is in Coach Ryan's near future but today, we caught up with his past in Platteville and talked with coaches he worked with about why they think he can pull off a win this weekend.

"You can tell Coach Ryan stories all day long," says Paul Erickson.

But their favorite stories? The tales of his success. After heading to the Final Four 5 times with the division three Pioneers they say Bo knows how to handle things this weekend in Texas.

"You always want to call in and say listen, the guy's been there 5 times to the final four and bringing back 4 national titles to Platteville."

Jeff Gard coached with him at Platteville and his brother, Greg, is the Badgers Assistant Coach right now. He says no one deserves this more.

"I've very excited, a little emotional as well. You can definitely see where these guys have come from, the time all of those guys in this whole program has put in, it's great to see they're being rewarded as well."

But he says getting mom and dad to realize that is a bit harder.

"Dad said we'll you know it's expensive, the flight down there and having to tell them, this doesn't happen all the time."

Back in 1998 Brad Stangel played for the Platteville champs and now coaches the team. He says he knows what it's like when Bo's on the road--he sticks to the routine.

"He might take them out to a nice Texas restaurant but that's pretty much the only thing different that they'll do."

Stangle says win or lose this weekend, Bo already has his greatest success under his belt.

"I think one of the biggest accomplishments that Coach Ryan is going to have is that he'll go down there and play a game on Saturday, and they're going to be a lot of people who feel that they're a part of it."

Making it not just a win for the Badgers, not just a win for Madison, but a win for Wisconsin.

"Make some shots, get some rebounds, and I think they'll play on Monday night."
