Alexandria, MN - June 23, 2014. The Madison Mallards (15-10) got back on track tonight in Alexandria, Minnesota, defeating the Alexandria Blue Anchors (6-21) by a score of 2-0. The Mallards lost on a walk off single last night against the Blue Anchors, but tonight the Mallards pitchers blanked Alexandria’s bats, giving up just three total hits.
Mallards starter Rob McDonnell (Illinois) went 5.2 shutout innings in his fourth start, striking out three while giving up one hit and three walks to move to 3-1 on the year.
The Mallards runs came on a RBI from center fielder Will Krug (Illinois) to score second baseman Robbie Tenerowicz (California) in the fourth and a Trent Higginbothem (North Florida) solo shot in the ninth, his second of the year, to put the Mallards ahead 2-0.
Closer Tim Black (Central Michigan) finished off the Blue Anchors in the ninth, retiring three of the four batters he faced to get his eighth save of the year.
Blue Anchors pitcher Sean Stutzman (Dallas Baptist) received the loss, giving up one run on five hits while striking out two.
The Mallards return to the “Duck Pond” tomorrow to face the Wisconsin Woodchucks (16-8) at 7:05 pm. Tuesday night is Boy Scout Night and will feature a Zimbrick Honda LEGO Giveaway. There will also be a UW Health Sports Medicine Developing Healthy Off-Speed Pitching Mechanics Clinic from 9 am – 12 pm.
