Mallards Shut Out For First Time of Season

The Lakeshore Chinooks shut out the Madison Mallards for the first time this season, 3-0.

Only one of the three runs the Chinooks scored off of Mallards starter Luke Staub (George Washington) was earned. They plated a run in the second on a sac bunt while they Mike Hollenbeck (Illinois State) had an RBI single and John Norwood (Vanderbilt) doubled in another in the sixth.

Staub went six innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked none and struck out four. Jack Livingston (Northwestern) pitched the remainder of the game and allowed just two hits while walking one and striking out two.

The closest the Mallards would get to scoring was in the fifth and sixth, when they left a runner on third base. Tate Matheny (Missouri State) grounded out to third with Geonte Jackson (San Jacinto CC) on third in the fifth while Mike Fitzgerald (Indiana State) grounded out to short with John LaPrise (Virginia) on third in the sixth.

The five Mallards hits on the night were all singles. LaPrise and Weeks—both Mallards position players on the All Star roster—were the two Mallards with multiple hits. They each finished 2-for-4.
