MADISON, Wis. - Taylor Wurtz, a senior on the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team, was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week after leading the Badgers over Illinois last Friday. The 6-0 guard earns her first player of the week honor after being named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice in 2009-10. She is also UW’s first Big Ten player of the week since Jacki Gulczynski was honored on Dec. 17, 2012.

Wurtz led the Badgers to a 76-64 overtime win over the Illini with a career-best 19 rebounds and tying her career high with 27 points. After only three points in the first half, Wurtz went on a scoring tear in the second half, putting up 14 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:29 left in regulation that tied the game at 58 and sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Brandon, Wis., native scored 10 points, including going 4-4 from the free throw line over the last 39 seconds to seal the win. Wurtz shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field, including 50 percent (4-of-8) from 3-point range.

Her rebounds tie her for fourth on the UW single-game record list and ties for first among Big Ten athletes this season. It was her third double-double of the season and 11th of her career.

The Badgers (8-5 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) wrap up their Big Ten-opening two game road trip with a game at Michigan (10-4, 1-0) on Thursday. Tip time is 6 p.m. CT from Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. UW opens the Big Ten home season on Sunday, hosting Iowa (12-4, 0-2) at 2 p.m. in the Kohl Center.
