Thursday Morning Wisconsin Sports Report

Posted Thursday, August 9, 2012 --- 7:40 a.m.

Here is the latest Wisconsin sports news from The Associated Press:

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Ryan Braun's RBI double in the eighth inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. The Reds were up 2-1 before Jonathan Broxton gave up two runs in the eighth. Brewers reliever John Axford earned the win and Jim Henderson picked up his second save.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Green Bay Packers quarterback Graham Harrell is getting his shot as Aaron Rodgers' backup. The former Texas Tech star is expected to get plenty of playing time in the Packers' preseason opener at San Diego tonight. Harrell has been with the team the past two seasons, but behind Rodgers and Matt Flynn on the depth chart.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Clayton Richard tossed a five-hitter as the San Diego Padres swept the Chicago Cubs with a 2-0 win yesterday. Richard struck out five batters in the game and held the Cubs to just five singles. Chicago starter Jeff Samardzija gave up one run in seven innings of work.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Marco Scutaro hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high seven runs last night as the San Francisco Giants routed the St. Louis Cardinals 15-0. Hunter Pence added a pair of hits and two RBIs for the Giants. Cardinals starter Joe Kelly took the loss after giving up seven runs in five innings.
