Thursday Morning Wisconsin Sports Report

Posted Thursday, August 30, 2012 --- 7:00 a.m.

Here is the latest Wisconsin sports news from The Associated Press:

CHICAGO (AP) -- Mike Fiers pitched seven-plus strong innings yesterday to lead the Milwaukee Brewers past the Chicago Cubs 3-1. Fiers allowed just four hits and struck out six to help the Brewers beat their division rival for the 13th time in 16 games this season. Darwin Barney drove in Chicago's only run with a groundout in the second inning.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers are working to determine who will back up NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. With Matt Flynn leaving in the offseason, the job went to Graham Harrell. He enters tonight's preseason finale against Kansas City having completed just 32 of 63 passes for 261 yards.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin quarterback Danny O'Brien is brushing off comparisons to his predecessor, Russell Wilson. O'Brien knows the comparisons will come, but says he's doing this best to put them aside. The No. 12 Badgers open the season Saturday against Northern Iowa.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pedro Alvarez homered and drove in three runs last night as the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0. Garrett Jones added an RBI double for the Pirates, who moved within one game of the NL's second wild card spot. Cardinals starter Joe Kelly took the loss after giving up five runs over five innings.
