A strong fourth quarter performance propelled Verona past West Friday night, as the Wildcats sealed up the runner-up title in the Big Eight with a 39-29 win.
Verona got on the board first with a safety, and came back for more on their ensuing drive. Quarterback John Tackett drove the Wildcats down to the goalline, and Eric Schmid finished it off with a short-yardage score to put Verona up 8-0.
The Wildcats kept it on the ground in the on their next drive, as Travis Murray found a seam up the middle to take it in for a touchdown. Verona would go up 15-0 over West.
The Regents came out firing in the second quarter under quarterback Alex Brown. On the first play of the second quarter, Brown slings a screen pass to Christian Graf, and Graf would dance his way to the endzone for a 25 yard score.
The game was tied 29-29 in the fourth quarter, but Verona put up 10 unanswered points in the quarter to run away with a 39-29 win.
