Waunakee rallies again, extends streak to 38 straight

Two weeks into the 2012 season one lesson is clear for those hoping to beat top ranked Waunakee, if you want to beat the 3-time defending state champs you better be ready to play a full 4 quarters.

For the second straight week the Warriors watched as their opponent scored two touchdowns to put them in a 14 point hole. But once again the D-2 state champs rallied. This time a late field goal ended the half 14-3 before the Warriors responded with 21 more points in the scecond half en route to a 24-14 win over Northern Badger rival DeForest.

Waunakee (2-0 overall, 1-0 Northern Badger) extended several winning streaks, including 87 in a row at home, a run that dates to 1998. The Warriors have also win 38 straight overall and 18 regular-season meetings in a row against DeForest.

But the Norskies (1-1, 0-1) gave the Warriors everything they could handle.

Waunakee took the second half kickoff and needed just six plays to march 80 yards to cut their deficit to just four at 14-10.

Tyler Jensen then picked off a Kyler Jilot pass at midfield and Decorah ended an 11-play, 51-yard drive with a 1-yard keeper around left end to give Waunakee the lead for good at 17-14.

The Norskies, just like Monona Grove the week before, attacked the Warriors defense via the pass. QB Jilot passed for 211 yards in the first half but was held in check by Waunakee in the 2nd half going 2-12 for just 19 yards passing.

It was a great game between to border rivals who just might meet again down the road in the playoffs.
