It was the championship game many hoped for last fall but were denied when Monona Grove was upset in the 2nd round of the WIAA playoffs.
But proved to be well worth the wait.
On a prep football opening night so good you had to pinch yourself to make sure it's real Waunakee and Monona Grove slugged it out for four long quarter with the the top ranke Warriros finally emerging with an amazing 45-38 win.
The Warriors extended their winning streak to a stunning 37 straight games.
The Silver Eagles had been pointing towards this game since the end of last season. It showed right from the start. Head coach Mike Stassi called the same play three straight times on M-G's opening possesion. The first two passes fall incomplete the third goes for an 80 yard TD. Brett Percy to James Connor. Bang the season is off and running.
After a defensive stop the very next offensive play MG runs, boom Percy down the middle to Evan Oldenburg. and just like that it's 14-0 game over right? Wrong?
The Warriors start grinding it out. Tyler Reynolds taking over for the now Badger Leo Musso scores to make 14-13. Then he carries it over the line again just before the half mamking it 24-20 M-G.
From then on it gets crazy.
Waunkee's running game and ball control offense took over. With the help of a few M-G turnovers the 3-time defending state champions survived to win 45-38 make it 37 in a row.
Next week it doesn't get any easier with Waunakee hosting DeForest and Monona Grove traveling to play Edgewood.
