Wisconsin men capture 11th-straight NCAA regional cross country title

VERONA, Wis. -- Senior Mohammed Ahmed's title helped the Wisconsin men's cross country team capture the 2012 NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional on Friday at the Badgers' Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course. The Badgers won with 43 team points.

Wisconsin's men won their 11th-consecutive Great Lakes Regional championship, earning an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Championship in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 17.

The Badgers extended the longest title streak by any team since the NCAA adopted the regional format in 1972, and increased their record total to 28 NCAA Great Lake Regional titles.

Wisconsin also extended their NCAA-record streak to 41 consecutive championship appearances, as they have qualified for every championship meet since 1972.

Ahmed (1st), Maverick Darling (5th) and Reed Connor (6th) led the Badgers' charge, while Alex Brill (15th) and Robert Finnerty (16th) also scored for the Badgers.

Wisconsin's women's team placed eighth with 182 points. Senior Ashley Beutler and sophomore Gabi Anzalone placed fifth and sixth, respectively, to pace the Badgers.

Michigan captured the women's team title with 41 points.
