Wausau, WI — The Madison Mallards (12-7, 33-19) appeared to have Wisconsin Woodchucks (11-7, 24-28) starter Dan Weigel figured out early Saturday night but managed only two runs after the first inning in a 6-4 loss.
Mallards left fielder Joe McCarthy and catcher Jason Goldstein had RBI singles in the first inning, but the Mallards had that lead quickly erased as the Woodchucks tallied three runs in the bottom half of the inning off of starter Cam Verbeke.
A McCarthy sac fly in the fifth pulled the Mallards within one at 4-3, but the Woodchucks tacked on two more one inning later to put the game away.
Tate Matheny doubled to lead off the ninth and had Jeff Zahn knock him in on a sac fly to center two batters later, but Geonte Jackson struck out swinging to end the contest.
The Mallards and Woodchucks square off Sunday at 5:05.
