Verona shutout in Q-Final loss to Rice Lake

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Junior forward Trae Coleman got the game's only goal, as Rice Lake beat Verona 1-0 in quarterfinals of the state high school boys hockey tournament Thursday night.

Coleman scored early in the second period, and that was enough to give Rice Lake the victory.

Rice Lake will play Fond du Lac Friday in semifinals. The other semifinal matchup pits Superior against Arrowhead.

Rice Lake (18-6), which defeated last year's state champion Eau Claire Memorial to advance to the state tournament, played solid defense to keep Verona off balance.

Coleman's goal came off a nice feed from behind the net by Trae Tyler 2:53 into the second period.

Prior to Thursday night, Verona (20-3-1) had not been shut out in any game and was on a 12-game winning streak.

Rice Lake goaltender Tanner Cernick stopped all 18 shots he faced.

Verona goaltender Austin Schmid had 15 saves.
