Monroe beats Xavier, advances to D-2 title game

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Mitch Tordoff scored 28 points, including 16 in the fourth quarter, and Monroe defeated Appleton Xavier 53-39 in a Division 2 semifinal of the state boys basketball tournament Friday.

Tordoff scored all but three of his fourth-quarter points from the free throw line, as the Cheesemakers closed the game on a 17-0 run.

Monroe (19-7) will play Wisconsin Lutheran (23-2) in Saturday's championship game.

Sophomore guard Bryan Tordoff tied the game at 39 with 4:17 left with a 3-pointer from the right wing after a loose ball squirted his way. A minute later, older brother Mitch sank a 3 from the same spot for a 42-39 lead.

Monroe's next six possessions ended with Mitch Tordoff, a senior guard, at the free throw line. He hit 11 of 12 from the line as the Cheesemakers pulled away.

Jonathan Burns led Xavier with 11 points.
