Very few of the current Verona boys hockey roster were on the team when the Wildcats last played at the state tournament in 2009. So for them their was no sting or bad memory to erase. But for those like star forward Eddie Matsushima who were part of that squad, Thursday nights win was worth waiting 3 years to get.
With four points total, Matsushima, who was on the Wildcats team that lost 1-0 to Rice Lake in the 2009 quarterfinals, helped Verona crush Sparta 8-0 in a state quarterfinal Thursday night at the Dane County Coliseum.
With the victory, Verona advanced to Friday's 8:15 p.m. semifinal against top ranked Green Bay Notre Dame, which defeated Superior 5-1 earlier Thursday.
Verona scored two goals in the first period and added three more in the 2nd and three in the 3rd en route to the 8 goal outburst.
Matt Opsal faced only 12 shots, but saved them all for the Wildcats.
