Former Lyons Township fire chief pleads not guilty to misdemeanor theft charge

ELKHORN, Wis. (AP) -- The former fire chief of Lyons Township has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge after being accused of using the fire department's credit card to buy gas for his personal vehicle.

Thirty-four-year-old Craig A. Amann of Chandler, Arizona entered the plea yesterday in Walworth County Court in southeast Wisconsin. He remains free on a $200 cash bond and $5,000 signature bond.

Prosecutors say the town's treasurer discovered an $80 gas purchase on the credit card in June that didn't have the fire department's approval.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine.

Amann is due in court again next month.
