Gov. Doyle Signs Bills on Discrimination, Bicycling
Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a bill that will increase penalties against employers who discriminate against their workers.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a bill that will increase penalties against employers who discriminate against their workers.
The governor also Monday signed another bill that allows police to ticket careless drivers who open their car doors into passing bicyclists.
The discrimination law requires companies found to discriminate to pay compensatory and punitive damages.
Democrats say the law protects victims of racial, gender and other forms of workplace discrimination. Republicans say it will lead to more lawsuits and hurt businesses.
The bicycle law puts the responsibility on drivers to prevent the common and dangerous collisions between bikes and car doors. Violators can be fined $40.

What a joke. Esp that Bicycling Law. Apparently Doyle is chauffered around in his limo and doesnt seen how Bicyclists act on the road, cutting in and out of traffic,running stop signs,tailgating and now he signed this law that punishes motorists when they open their door and a bicycle comes up from behind? If you ask me the Law is too LAX when it comes to most Bicyclists, they are on the roads like motor vehicles are and they need to be held to the same laws and motorists are.
Tougher laws against discrimination will be a good thing provided it is actual discrimination and the laws are enforced. I do not like that he put all responsibility on the auto drivers in the other law however. As a motorcyclist and auto driver, it is my responsibility to look for situations that may indicate someone will be opening a car door in my path. But we'll give bicyclists some special treatment because a bicyclist can't possibly be responsible enough to watch out for this like I do on my motorcycle. Only an idiot purposely rides within 2 feet of a car when there's someone in the car.
