MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The estimated property tax increase under the new state budget is about the same as it was expected to be under Gov. Jim Doyle's original budget proposal.

Property taxes under Doyle's budget released in February were projected to increase $91 this year and $134 next year on a median-valued home.

Under the budget as passed by the Legislature last month, taxes this year on that $167,000 home would be $2 more, or $93. But next year, they would be $123, which is $11 less than originally projected.

The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau says in its analysis released Monday that numerous property tax credit increases approved by the Legislature helped offset other changes that otherwise would have led to even higher property taxes.
