MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Prosecutors have charged a Redgranite man with raising roosters to fight.
Fifty-five-year-old David W. Janke faces 10 felony counts of keeping an animal with intent to engage it in fighting and nine counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
According to a criminal complaint, investigators found 157 chickens and roosters, rooster fighting magazines and schedules and about eight guns at Janke's home. Janke allegedly told investigators he was only raising roosters, but then said he had participated in a rooster fight near Turtle Lake.
Janke's attorney, Raymond Edelstein, says Janke was simply raising the birds. Edelstein says Janke had no intent to engage them in fights.
