JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Janesville might join Madison, Green Bay and other cities that allow city dwellers to gather their own eggs in their backyards.
Two aldermen say they'll introduce an ordinance allowing Janesville residents to raise chickens in the city.
David Innis brought the proposal to the aldermen. Innis says raising chickens for food is gaining popularity as more people embrace the idea of becoming self sufficient with their food.
Innis says Janesville's ordinance could be patterned after Madison's law which allows up to four chickens in the city, but no roosters.
It doesn't allow butchering and requires that chickens be kept in an enclosure and a certain distance from neighbors.
