CALEDONIA, Wis. (AP) -- Fire officials say the death of a Racine County woman could possibly have been prevented if she had working smoke detectors in her home.
Sixty-year-old Marie Erato died Sunday when fire swept her house in Caledonia. Firefighters say the home was engulfed in flames when they arrive.
Fire Chief Richard Roeder says the first floor sustained most of the heat and smoke damage. Officials say the fire apparently started in the living room.
Family members say Erato was a retired probation officer.
