Proposed Rule Targets Race-Based School Mascots

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- All 35 Wisconsin schools with nicknames that relate to American Indians may be forced to prove how they are not discriminatory under a proposal being considered by the state's education department.
A new Wisconsin law gives the Department of Public Instruction the ability to bar schools from using race-based logos and mascots if a complaint is filed and the terms or images in question are determined to be discriminatory.
The department held a hearing Thursday on a host of rules related to how the law will be enforced. The department wants to list all the names and mascots it deems to be discriminatory and then require districts to prove they are not.
That list would cover all of the race-based nicknames currently used by Wisconsin schools.
