Construction Chaos

" It's just never ending and you just have to expect it."

That's according to one frustrated motorist.

Since late August construction crews have literally been pounding the pavement on the west end of the Beltline in Madison.

According to Gary Sassman, a Project Manager with the Department of Transportation, " We are going to rehabilitate the pavement out there. Basically break it into smaller pieces and put an asphaltic overlay on it."

The construction actually begins back at Gammon Road and it continues ahead two miles until you hit Old Sauk Road.

Unfortunately things are going to get worse before they get better.

Sassman says, " This is really kind of a short term fix to help out for the next five or ten years."

Motorist Maggie Guerrero says, " Well it's a pain and if it has to be done it has to be done."

She's not the only who feels that way.

Others say, " Well if it's needed we can use it. But I'm just saying it's always going to slow down even when we had good roads here it was always slow."

If that doesn't make getting around town hard enough there's also work being done to the Seminole, Park Street, Rimrock Road and Stoughton Road ramps.

They're hoping to ease congestion by adding extra lanes.

Sassman says, " When we're done it should work a lot better."

According to officials with the Department of Transportation the construction should wrap up by the end of October.

Until then, driver Paul Hickman says, " Not much I can do about it. I don't think it matters if I like it or not."

Right now between Gammon and Old Sauk Roads traffic is down to one lane in both directions from 7PM to 5AM.

According to DOT officials there are alternate routes posted.

However, if you have to use the belt line they do ask that you slow down.
