America’s Best Flowers Offers Holiday Porch Pot Workshop for Creating Memories

Date(s): 11/22/2014 Date(s): 11/23/2014

9am to 3pm

America's Best Flowers, 4311 Vilas Hope Rd., Cottage Grove, WI
Grace the entryway of your home this holiday season with a beautiful, festive porch pot you’ve made yourself at America’s Best Flowers! Gather your family and friends and come out to our greenhouse this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 22-23, any time from 9am to 3pm for our Holiday Porch Pot Workshop. It’s a creative, fun, and easy way to decorate for the holidays! Bring your camera and create an exceptional Christmas memory by taking pictures of your designing process.

You’re welcome to bring in your *empty* floral container or purchase one from our collection, and we’ll provide free sand for your container or liner (we recommend a liner for ceramic containers). We have bundles of assorted, fresh greens, colorful dried botanicals, artificial picks, and silk flowers for you to choose from! (We do ask that you purchase your porch pot supplies from us, and do not bring them in from home or other suppliers.) Our experienced staff will be on hand to assist you with your design while you do the actual arranging.

Finished prices range from $35 to $150 depending on how large, full, and dramatic you want your porch pot to be! Pre-registration for this workshop is appreciated but not required. If you can’t make it this weekend, feel free to stop by Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:30am to 3:30pm to make your own porch pot. Please note that assistance may be limited outside of the workshop weekend.

America’s Best Flowers is Dane County’s largest locally owned and operated garden center. We are located at 4311 Vilas Hope Road in Cottage Grove. For more gardening info, visit our website at www.americasbestflowers.com

PlayTime Productions’ The Snow Queen at 17 Dane County Venues

PlayTime Productions performs a unique rendition of The Snow Queen. The play will be performed at 17 Dane County venues this fall (see schedule below) at a low cost for the entire family. A donation of $3 or less per person is suggested at most venues.

The Snow Queen follows our young heroine Gerda on a quest to rescue her best friend Kai from the mysterious Snow Queen’s clutches. A band of goblins has released a magic mirror into the world, and anyone unlucky enough to get a shard caught in his or her eye sees the whole world as ugly. This fate befalls Kai while he is playing during the first snowfall of the year. When the Snow Queen whisks him away to her frozen palace, Gerda leaves her doting grandfather behind and ventures out into the world to track him down. On her journey, she will encounter a talking crow, a princess, the four winds, the elements and more! Can she find Kai before it’s too late?

PlayTime Productions creates community theatre by children, for children. Since 1979, its all-youth casts (ages 8-15) have enchanted audiences around Dane County with original theatrical versions of classic fairy tales and other stories like The Red Shoes, The Little Match Girl, Ali Baba, Cinderella. Founded by the late Teddy Studt, PlayTime Productions is dedicated to bringing “a little magic” into the lives of the 5,000 Dane County residents who attend PlayTime’s productions each year.

With Grateful Acknowledgment to our major sponsor each season since 2001 PlayTime thanks the American Girl’s Fund for Children. This project is supported by Dane Arts with additional funding from the Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation and is funded in part by a grant from the Madison Arts Commission, with additional funds from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The full touring schedule is detailed below. For more information, contact 437-4217, playtime@mhtc.net, or visit our website at playtimeproductions.org. Like us on Facebook - PlayTime Productions Children's Theatre.

Rock County's Choral Union Presents "Elijah" for 133rd Anniversary Concerts

Date(s): 12/7/2014 Date(s): 12/6/2014

Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, December 7, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.

Cargill United Methodist Church, 2000 Wesley Avenue, Janesville, WI 53545
21 altos, 21 bass, 29 sopranos, 12 tenors – and that’s just the on-stage chorus. Add 4 soloists, 45-member symphony orchestra, 15-member off-stage youth chorus, 1 off-stage youth soloist/trio member, conductor – and this year’s Choral Union comes into focus.

Choral Union celebrates its 133rd anniversary with two performances of “Elijah,” an oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn. Concerts take place at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014, and again at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at Cargill United Methodist Church, 2000 Wesley Avenue, Janesville.

“To the masses of music-loving people, Mendelssohn requires no introduction – especially when “Elijah” is mentioned,” notes Conductor Richard Severing.

“The masterpiece has taken its place on a level with “The Messiah” by Handel,” and Severing goes on to say that “Elijah” is “as full of drama as an opera.” The conductor comments that the work has such “warmth of harmony and melody that it is loved by everyone who has ever heard it or sung it.” The selection is described as “very large in scope and yet very intimate and personal for the listener and for the performer as well. The subject of this oratorio is the compelling story of Elijah and the people of Israel as they struggle with belief and trust in God.”

Soloists include Marie Severing (soprano), Sarah Leuwerke (mezzo-soprano), Alex Gmeinder (tenor), and Dan Richardson (baritone).

It was twelve years ago that Choral Union last performed this work, and we think you will agree that an encore performance has been long overdue!

Advance tickets of $12.00 may be ordered by calling (608) 741-5074 or may be purchased from Choral Union members. Tickets are $15.00 at the door on both performance days.

For further information, visit Choral Union at: www.choralunionjanesville.com and at: www.facebook.com/JanesvilleChoralUnion.

Paula Poundstone

Date(s): 5/7/2015

7:30 p.m.

Al. Ringling Theatre 136 4th, Baraboo, Wi 53913
32 years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country — stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR’s popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me. She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany with the Boston Globe to write: “Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy.” Audience members may put it a little less elegantly: “I peed my pants.”

While there is no doubt that Poundstone is funny, the thing that separates her from the pack of comics working today and that has made her a legend among comics and audiences alike is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd. Poundstone says: “No two shows I do are the same. It’s not that I don’t repeat material. I do. My shows, when they’re good, and I like to think they often are, are like a cocktail party. When you first get there, you talk about how badly you got lost and how hard it was to find parking. Then you tell a story about your kids or what you just saw on the news. You meet some new people and ask them about themselves. Then, someone says, “Tell that story you used to tell,” and then someone on the other side of the room spills a drink, and you mock them. No one ever applauds me when I leave a party, though. I think they high five.”

Paula’s interchanges with the audience are never mean or done at a person’s expense. She even manages to handle politics without provoking the pall of disapproval less artful comics have received.
