Device Workshop

Date(s): 11/1/2014

4722 E Towne Blvd, Madison, WI
Did you know that 76 percent of people would rather live without chocolate than their smartphone? Another 62 percent would rather live without TV. Smartphones have become a “must-have” device for many people, but not everyone is aware of everything they are capable of doing. Devices such as the iPhone 6 can help simplify and enhance our lives, and U.S. Cellular wants to show residents the tips and tricks of using these devices to the fullest.

U.S. Cellular is offering a free Device Workshop where current or potential smartphone users can ask questions and learn about any device they are interested in. The workshop is open to everyone, and you don’t have to be a U.S. Cellular customer to attend.

In addition, many people will be getting ready for the rush of holiday season. U.S. Cellular associates are available to assist people who want to evaluate options, help with questions, gift giving, or related apps.

“We want to ensure that every customer knows how to get the most out of their device and has a great wireless experience,” said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in the Mid-South. “At U.S. Cellular, we also understand the importance of having a reliable 4G LTE network so our customers can use their devices where they live, work and play.”

RSVP by calling (608) 245-2020.

Screenwriters discuss writing for film and television
at Madison College event

Local screenwriters will share their experiences in writing for film and television at a Writer’s Life Lecture Series event held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 30 at Madison College’s Downtown campus.

Sig Ueland, author of the award-winning comedy feature Coffee, Kill Boss, film industry veteran Ken Miyamoto, and Rebecca Williams Spindler, vice president of Wisconsin Screenwriters Forum, will be panelists for the event “Writing for Film and Television” to be held in Room 240 of the Downtown campus. Actor and screenwriter Bob Curry, a writing instructor at Madison College, will moderate the event, which is free to the public.

Following an MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA and a two-year program in improvisational theater at Second City in Chicago, Ueland has gone on to create, write, and produce a variety of works for film and television, including Coffee, Kill Boss, which opened the 2013 Austin Film Festival and went on to win multiple awards.

Miyamoto has worked in the film industry as a screenwriter, script reader/story analyst, and studio liaison. He has been an intern for director Randal Kleiser, and his writing credits include episodes for the TV series Blackout, by Sonar Entertainment.

Author Williams Spindler has taught screenwriting classes for Wisconsin Screenwriters Forum, UW-Madison Literary Fest, and UW-Madison Continuing Education. A versatile writer whose experience in film and television includes screenplays and executive production, Williams Spindler also authors books for young adults, one of which, Moving Out and Moving On, received the 2013 Tofte/Wright Children’s Literature Award.

Paula Poundstone

Date(s): 5/7/2015

7:30 p.m.

Al. Ringling Theatre 136 4th, Baraboo, Wi 53913
32 years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country — stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR’s popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me. She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany with the Boston Globe to write: “Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy.” Audience members may put it a little less elegantly: “I peed my pants.”

While there is no doubt that Poundstone is funny, the thing that separates her from the pack of comics working today and that has made her a legend among comics and audiences alike is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd. Poundstone says: “No two shows I do are the same. It’s not that I don’t repeat material. I do. My shows, when they’re good, and I like to think they often are, are like a cocktail party. When you first get there, you talk about how badly you got lost and how hard it was to find parking. Then you tell a story about your kids or what you just saw on the news. You meet some new people and ask them about themselves. Then, someone says, “Tell that story you used to tell,” and then someone on the other side of the room spills a drink, and you mock them. No one ever applauds me when I leave a party, though. I think they high five.”

Paula’s interchanges with the audience are never mean or done at a person’s expense. She even manages to handle politics without provoking the pall of disapproval less artful comics have received.

It is not often one may hear a keyboard concerto by J S Bach on the piano. Coupled with Mendelssohn’s flashy Piano Concerto No.1, and in the hands of soloist Ilya Yakushev, we will be ‘rocking’. The Four Freshmen

Date(s): 11/1/2014

7:30 p.m.

Middleton Performing Arts Center, Middleton High School
The Four Freshmen were one of the top vocal groups of the 1950's, and formed the bridge between "40s ensembles like the Mel-Tones and harmony-based rock & roll bands such as the Beach Boys as well as groups like Spanky & Our Gang and the Manhattan Transfer. The group's roots go back to the end of the 1940's and a barbershop quartet-influenced outfit called Hal's Harmonizers organized at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Butler University in Indiana by two brothers, Ross and Don Barbour. Their repertoire centered on standards such as "Moonglow" and "The Christmas Song," and they began to show an unusually free, improvisational approach to their harmony singing. They are also completely self-contained instrumentally, each member playing more than one instrument and allowing the others to switch off to different roles. There were member changes along the way - new lineups of the group have continued to perform into the 21st century, however, and are considered an artistically valid ensemble.
