The Four Freshmen

Date(s): 11/1/2014

7:30 p.m.

Middleton Performing Arts Center, Middleton High School
The Four Freshmen were one of the top vocal groups of the 1950's, and formed the bridge between "40s ensembles like the Mel-Tones and harmony-based rock & roll bands such as the Beach Boys as well as groups like Spanky & Our Gang and the Manhattan Transfer. The group's roots go back to the end of the 1940's and a barbershop quartet-influenced outfit called Hal's Harmonizers organized at the Arthur Jordan Conservatory of Butler University in Indiana by two brothers, Ross and Don Barbour. Their repertoire centered on standards such as "Moonglow" and "The Christmas Song," and they began to show an unusually free, improvisational approach to their harmony singing. They are also completely self-contained instrumentally, each member playing more than one instrument and allowing the others to switch off to different roles. There were member changes along the way - new lineups of the group have continued to perform into the 21st century, however, and are considered an artistically valid ensemble.

Simply Sinatra

Date(s): 10/4/2014

7:30 p.m.

Middleton Performing Arts Center, Middleton High School
Steve Lippia and his 10-piece band bring to life the music and lyrics of some of the greats such as Cole Porter, Sammy Cahn, and Rodgers and Hart. Steve's natural sound and style is a remarkable combination of his own honest musical interpretation, combined with influences form some of the best singers of this era. His sound is reminiscent of a younger Sinatra, combined, perhaps, with that of Harry Connick,, Jr. and Bobby Darin. But it is Steve who comes through.
His repertoire includes such great standards as "I've Got You Under My Skin", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Mack The Knife", "That's Life", and "The Best Is Yet To Come". Steve's wonderful voice and great stage presence bring tremendous style, class and elegance to the stage.

PRESS RELEASE

Comic book writers/artists discuss
careers at Madison College event

Local comic book writers and illustrators will discuss their own careers in the comic book industry at a Writer’s Life Lecture Series event held at 7 p.m. on September 25 at Madison College’s Downtown campus.

KC Carlson, a blogger for Westfield Comics; Cory Carani, a Raven Software video game artist; and Jeff Butler, a 30-year veteran of the comic book industry; will be panelists for the event “Writing for the Comic Book Industry” to be held in Room 240 of the Downtown campus. Larry Hansen, journalism instructor at Madison College, will moderate the event, which is free to the public.

Carlson has been working in the comic book industry since the age of 14, where he worked at a local magazine distributor, stripping covers off of unsold comic books to return for credit. For most of the 1990s, he worked at DC Comics, editing comic book projects such as Superman, the Legion of Super-Heroes, DC Comics Secret Files, and Adventures in the DC Universe. He currently writes about comics history and new product reviews at westfieldcomics.com/blog and comicsworthreading.com.

Carani has worked as an inker in the comic industry for many years. He is primarily known for his long collaboration with penciler Jeff Moy on DC Comics' Legionnaires series in the 1990s. Cory shifted gears in the early 2000s, joining Raven Software, where he continues to create artwork for video games.

Butler, who teaches comic book and video game art at Madison College and Madison Media Institute, broke into the comic book industry in 1983, helping writer Mike Baron create Madison's own superhero: Badger. He later joined the art department of TSR, Inc., drawing fantasy related artwork for Dungeons & Dragons and became the primary artist for TSR's MARVEL Superheroes Role Playing game. Over the years, he has worked on comic book projects such as the Green Hornet, Jason vs. Leatherface, Charles Barkley vs. Godzilla, Hercules, and Xena, to name a few. Butler has also worked for Raven Software as a video game character designer and concept artist.

The Writer’s Life Lecture Series, sponsored by Madison College’s Journalism and Creative Writing Programs and the Madison College School of Continuing Education, presents a monthly program that showcases the careers of local writers and journalists.

Windows of Worlds

Date(s): 9/28/2014

12-5pm

Edgewood College, 1000 Edgewood College Dr. Madison, WI
Join us, September 28th, as we celebrate the fourth year of Windows of Worlds (i.e. WoW), a community building art project produced by GESWERK. The message of WoW is that everyone has a unique perspective in which they view the world, and how we can use this creative diversity to connect. It’s FREE, and will take place outside in the Wingra Terrace courtyard at Edgewood College. This year visitors will enjoy FREE family photos, hoop dance workshops, face painting, guided tours of the WoW installation, and more.

About the WoW project: Hand built picture frames are taken into the community to schools, art centers, and youth organizations for people to create the window to their world. Participants paint the frames reflecting who they are, how they define themselves, their dreams and aspirations...

Each picture frame comes together for a public art installation at Edgewood College, where they are suspended from trees using fishing line. Viewers are invited to explore the floating frames and see the world through someone else’s unique window.

AutumnFest

Date(s): 9/27/2014

9am-3pm

Brodhead - Downtown Square - 1111 West 2nd Ave
AutumnFest is Saturday, September 27th

The days and nights begin to get a little cooler, the leaves begin to change and Brodhead’s AutumnFest is just a few days away.
This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday Sept 27th, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00p.m.
Visitors are welcome to enjoy the small town hospitality. There will be a plethora of things to do through-out the day.
Visitors can visit the farmers/craft market: participate in the unveiling of Brodhead’s second mural; eat at the food stands; have a drink at the beer tent; children can enjoy the pumpkin bowling; visit the Petting Zoo; and many other activities. People walking around the Square can also enjoy music from the Stateline Playboys. With a donation of $5.00 for adults and $3.00 children 12 and under – stroll on down to “Embrace the Race” take pleasure in a pontoon boat ride.
Trick or Treating is available at participating local businesses from 10 a.m. to noon; and $1.00 hayrides through Brodhead are available from 11a.m. to 3 p.m.
What really makes AutumnFest special, for many people, is the Chili Contest. Some of the best chefs for miles around bring in their special recipes, with their secret ingredients, to make some of the best chili. The smells from the chili, slowly cooking from early morning until a winner is selected, is enough to make people want to stand by the cooking tent and just take a deep breath.
The public is welcomed to take part in voting for the best chili. There is a $3.00 charge for the chili tasting.
At noon the costume parade will begin at the Gazebo.
At 2:45 p.m. the winners of the Chili Contest are announced.
At 3:15 p.m. Habitat for Humanity will begin the Duck Races.
More information about AutumnFest is available at the Brodhead Chamber of Commerce web site at www.brodheadchamber.org.
