Arboretum Walk: Prairies and Savannas on the Grady Tract

Free naturalist-led hike. Now is a good time to see the contrast between the sandy, dry West Knoll and wet-mesic Greene Prairie. No facilities at tour site; some sloping terrain.

Arboretum Earth Partnership for Families: Listen to the Buzzzzz of the Prairie

Free program for families at the UW Arboretum. Join us to listen to the late-summer sounds of the prairie. Discover birds, grasshoppers, crickets, bumble bees and maybe even the rustle of a snake slithering through the grass. Ongoing drop-in activities at the Visitor Center from 12:30-3:30 p.m., naturalist-led hike from 1:30-2:30.

Arboretum Walk: Sample of Dane County in 1834

Free naturalist-led hike. Restored prairie, savanna and wetlands near the Visitor Center provide an example of what Dane County looked like in the 1830s. Restoration was an unknown adventure when started here in 1934; many different experiments have resulted in what is here today.

Arboretum Native Plant Garden Tour: Native Grasses

Arboretum Walk: Greene Prairie and Grady Savannas

Arboretum Walk: Wingra Oak Savanna Restoration and Monroe Street Environs

Meet at the gravel parking lot along Arbor Drive just off Monroe Street, Madison, WI
Free naturalist-led hike. This restoration of oak savanna has been a cooperation among the Arboretum, the Dudgeon Monroe Neighborhood and volunteers since 1992. We’ll visit the restoration and the Wheeler Council Ring, designed by Jens Jensen, plus two of the natural springs that made this area a site for Native Americans for at least 4,000 years.

Arboretum Night Walk: Insect Serenade

Arboretum Class: Forest Garden Design

Learn the basics of how to plant a forest garden, including mushrooms! In this class we will cover site considerations, plant guilds, plant selection, and forest garden designs. Arboretum Walk: Curtis Prairie
